The Coach’s Memo – KISS

Keep It Simple Stupid

Keep It Simple Salesman

Kan I See Straight….

Ok, so I made the last one up. But I’m sure you heard of the two before that.

If you are struggling with anything in your business, your work, or your life in general, go back to KISS. If you’re still not sure of how to do that, consider the answer to another riddle.

Q: How do you eat an elephant? A: One bite at a time.

Over the next few weeks, I will discuss the various bites I need to take to eat my elephant. But to get you started, I’ll give you a few suggestions on where to start. Remember, we’re going to keep it simple.

  1. Prioritize – If you’re not sure which challenges you should take on first, you first need to decide what is the most important, and what is the most urgent. You might have one chore to do that isn’t the most important, but it needs to be done by a certain deadline. (i.e. a customer needs a product in 2 days). Another item might be much more important, but you might have a little more time to accomplish this task. (i.e. negotiating a lease for your business that’s coming up in 3 weeks.)
  2. Be Honest – This is not always easy, is it? But this is so important. If nothing else with nobody else, you must be honest with yourself. You need to tell yourself the truth about what resources you have available to you; if you have dug yourself a hole you need to be honest with those around you about your situation; if you know you are overmatched, you need to be honest and ask for help.
  3. Start Without Delay – The tasks will not become easier or go away because we procrastinate or stall. Every race starts with the first step. Even if that is a small step or a slow step, take the step. Begin taking some action toward improving the situation. Maybe that first step is asking for help. Maybe that first step is eliminating distractions. But take a step.

So today, hopefully you have your tasks already prioritized as to what needs your attention first. So do you have the resources available and are you ready to start the first task? Maybe you have to wait on a confirmation from a customer. OK, then move on to the next task. Or perhaps you have been waiting for 3 days for the confirmation from that customer on a job he/she wanted in a hurry. So then your first step is to call that customer and remind them that you are waiting for their response. Remind them that they told you they were in a rush. You might find out that they changed their mind. Or that they weren’t in such a rush. How many times have you hesitated to make that call for fear of upsetting the customer, or afraid that you made the mistake and had overlooked an email. Sure they may be upset that you missed that email they sent 2 days ago. But how much more upset will they be if they call you in 2 more days wondering when they will get their product…. and you have to admit you hadn’t ordered it yet because you were waiting for the email they had already sent you? OUCH!

So take the first bite out of that elephant. Be honest with yourself. But don’t be defeatist. Don’t talk yourself out of succeeding. And if you are honest and admit you need help….maybe you need a coach.

I think I can help you with that part.

Check out my latest poll! Last week 14 out of 17 people said that they would count their change if a clerk did not count the change back to them at the store. 3 said they would just walk away. Hmmm… hope that computer was right.

Finally, here’s a verse to help you succeed:

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 ASV

“Rejoice always; pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus to you-ward.”

Notice that it doesn’t say to rejoice only when you close that big deal. It doesn’t say be thankful only when you win the lottery. As you start taking on this new week, rejoice, be thankful, and take that first bite out of the elephant.
